Teacher’s notes:

Before the “News at 10” the class should discuss the different types of radio stations. What is a good radio program? How do they prefer to have the news served?

It may be a good idea to let the class listen to a news broadcast before the simulation.

The news broadcast can be extended to ten minutes, which in my experience gives the best results. More than ten minutes does not work well for my classes.

The groups of 3-4 students should have 1-2 hours to prepare for the broadcast. It is important that the groups understand that all students must present at least one piece of news.

The actual broadcast could be recorded on tape in separate rooms if available or even videotaped, but personally, I more often than not just let the students speak live without recording the event.

After the “News at 10” the class should discuss the types of editorial lines chosen and if they actually used them in their broadcasts.
