Prof.
Leo van Lier, Monterey Institute of International Studies Technology in education has detractors and enthusiasts, fence sitters and bystanders (innocent and otherwise). Some have argued that computer use can enhance interactive language learning, promoting autonomy and equalizing opportunities. Others claim, with Larry Cuban, that computers have been "oversold and underused," and indeed, the cost-effectiveness, and the cost consequences, are not well understood at this point. In this overview I will take a systemic look at the impact of computers on language learning and teaching from a classroom, an institutional, and a social/societal perspective. Issues of teacher preparation, learner needs, equity, budgets, and classroom interaction (real and virtual) will be examined, and I will try to draw up a blueprint with practical proposals for a way forward.
