Simulations

Students Working with a simulation created by Ken Jones called "Red Desert". The students have individual profiles with information they need to share for the whole group to "survive".

A sample video of this simulation is being prepared have a pre-look here.

Other simulation materials:

Airport is a simulation that can be used by students with a language competence around level B1 (European Language Portfolio).

The simulation can be played in groups with three to five students (if less than five in a group then some students will have to have more than one profile in the simulation).

The simulation is self explanatory; each student is given a text with a personal profile, the students read and inform the other group members about the content.

When all members of a group know the given information the success of the group in the simulation depends on following the information and having a proper strategy.

The students should not be allowed to speak their own language during the simulation.

To play the simulation the students need 81 map squares. Each square has a top side with a number, the squares represent parts of a land map. The students can move across the map by choosing squares, when a square is chosen the students turn around the map square to see the bottom side which has information.

Before class the teacher should print the file with the map squares and cut out these.

Download the files below to use the simulation in your class:

Airport_squares.pdf  (file with 81 squares, table side)
Airport_top_numbers.pdf ( 81 squares top view)

One of the students has to fill in a diary / time table. This paper should also be printed before class:

airport_table.pdf  (The time table that the students fill in during the simulation)

To play the simulation the students need the following profiles in print (choose language / or translate into a new target language!):

Personal_profiles_en.pdf The profiles in English
Personal_profiles_es.pdf The profiles in Spanish
Personal_profiles_de.pdf The profiles in German
Personal_profiles_ro.pdf  The profiles in Romanian
Personal_profiles_dk.pdf  The profiles in
Danish

In 2005 We have continued to contribute new materials. During the project the teams came up with many ideas for simulations that would be suitable for vocational students. Built on a Dutch idea (Frans can Schaik) we have now completed a new simulation titled: "A Location for Best Practice Machine Tools plc" Since New Year we have adapted and translated  the simulation into Basque, Danish, English, German, Romanian, and Spanish. The students have to decide on a suitable location for a new machine tools factory, they are supplied with four options and have to compare taxes, infrastructure, available employees etc.

Download the Basque version: BEST PRACTICE MACHINE TOOLS plc KONPAINIARAKO KOKALEKUA
Download the Danish version: En beliggenhed til Best Practice Maskin Værktøj A/S

News at 10
Shipwrecked

In "News at 10" the students prepare a radio news broadcast. They get the news from the Internet or from other sources.

To download the students' brief and teacher's notes in Word format click here

Watch a video of three students presenting the news:

in High Band quality

in modem quality

Please note that the videos do not have any resemblance with the proposed videos in the project.

An exemplary material developed by Ken Jones from Nine Graded Simulations (Longman, Max Hueber Verlag, and Munksgaard). It is the aim of the project to develop material like this for use in the lesser taught languages. The material developed during the project will be available for free use in YOUR classroom.
Students working with the simulation. The idea behind the simulations is that the students have a problem to solve which can only be solved through communication and strategy.

Watch a video with students working with the simulation. Speakers' comments are still missings.
