Level (listening
level required): B2 - C1
Summary:
"Interview with a
portrait of the SYNOCO
marketing company.
During the interview the
following questions are
raised:
How do you create a
competitive edge in your
field? (Technological
advances? Product
development?)
What is more important;
focusing on production
or sale?
In what way do you take
the global market into
consideration at the
planning stage of your
products?
Is it only production,
which is influenced by
the global market, or is
this also the case with
other activities like
marketing, control and
distribution?
What demands do the
global market place on
your employees? (E.g.
cultural understanding,
flexibility)
When we are talking
about good marketing
strategy, what do you
consider to be the
greatest differences
between business to
business relations and
other markets, e.g. the
consumer market?
Cultural notes:
Interesting case study
showing marketing
strategies
Language notes:
The interviewer is
Danish, but the bulk /
core of the interview is
the part of the
interviewee who is
British.

Summary: A
student buys a computer
but he does not know how
to connect it. He phones
a friend and asks for
help. The friend is
eager to help, but his
attempt also ends in
failure. One more friend
is invited to help. He
shows and explains the
two friends how to
connect the computer.
Cultural notes:
The Lithuanians tend to
use not only a lot of
slang, but barbarisms as
well in their language.
This is especially
popular among students.
Computer terms have
brought a lot of
barbarisms and slang
into the Lithuanian
language. The problem
has two aspects: on the
one hand, the
Lithuanians find some of
the Lithuanian
equivalents suggested by
the linguists funny and
cumbersome and prefer to
use barbarisms; on the
other hand, students try
to show off by using
barbarisms and slang in
their language.
Language notes:
Questions and answers,
basic vocabulary related
to the theme of the
film.
The language includes
some slang and a number
of barbarisms, which are
borrowed from the
English language. Such
words are put into
quotation marks in the
dialogues, as their
usage is incorrect. For
example, instead of
saying ‘kompiuteris’,
the people tend to
shorten the word and say
‘kompas’. They use
barbarisms, such as
‘keibordas’ (=
klaviatūra) or ‘mausas’
(= pelė), which are
simply English words
‘keyboard’ and ‘mouse’
with a Lithuanian
ending. This tendency is
especially strong among
computer programmers and
students who study
computer science. It is
hard to provide the
translation of such
words into English, as
the English word or a
shortened English word
with a Lithuanian ending
is used. The linguists
try to fight the problem
by creating and
suggesting the
Lithuanian equivalents
but quite a lot of them
sound inappropriate and
funny to the speakers
and do not find the way
to the usage in everyday
language.

Summary: Sophy, a
foreign student, meets
with Marius, a student
from Kaunas, in the
downtown. They decide to
have dinner together.
Marius invites Sophy to
try some traditional
Lithuanian dishes,
introduces her to the
Lithuanian cuisine.
Cultural notes:
Each country’s national
cuisine is interesting
and unique. Lithuanians
like to eat good, tasty,
and filling foods.
Lithuanian traditional
cuisine took shape over
many centuries and was
much influenced by
cultural contacts with
neighbouring nations.
The Lithuanian cuisine
distinguishes itself by
a wide choice of potato
dishes. One of the most
famous Lithuanian dishes
is ‘didžkukuliai’ or as
the Lithuanians call it
‘cepelinai’.
‘Šaltibarščiai’ is
another traditional
Lithuanian dish. It is a
cold beetroot soup
served with green
onions, sour cream and
boiled potatoes. This
soup is especially
popular in the
summertime when it is
hot for it helps to
refresh oneself. ‘Gira’
(kvass) is a cold drink,
usually made from bread.
It is also very popular
in summertime.
Language notes:
Basic vocabulary related
to the theme of the
film. The language
includes questions and
answers that are used
when requesting and
providing service.
Some language used by
the students and the
waitress is incorrect
and would be corrected
by linguists, for
example ‘o tada eis
didžkukuliai pagal
eiliškumą’, ‘kolkas’,
however, this is the
language that the young
people usually speak.

their health problems
and measures they take

Cultural notes:
When autumn comes and
the weather becomes
chilly and wet,
different types of
disease start attacking
people. Students are the
ones that are the most
vulnerable, for they
study a lot, don’t get
proper meals on time,
don’t rest very well,
and usually don’t take
care of their health. So
they are easily exposed
to different types of
disease. On the other
hand, some students
simulate illness and
hurry to the doctors, as
they usually need some
excuse for
non-attendance of
lectures or failure in
the exams.

Cultural notes:
Solariums are very
popular in Lithuania,
especially among young
people. Nowadays it is
so fashionable to look
suntanned. Even in a
deep winter time, when
it is hardly ever
possible to see the sun
in the sky, you may meet

have a very nice suntan.
Of course, not a natural

2007. 376mol gouf

Freides owes a mat enger

ass schwéier ze soen,
wéivill Leit d’Emissioun

Sécher gouf et flott
Momenter, wou e puer
Leit ugeruff hunn, fir e

Haut huet de Bahá’í

etabléiert. Ech si ganz
frou, iech kënnen déi

Superstitions derived

Duration: 3:22
Level (listening

Summary: On a
cold winter day, our
foreign students gather
in a classroom and,
influenced by the bad
weather, discuss upon an
old Romanian legend.
Baba Dochia was a very
old woman who used to
wear 9 sheepskin coats
at the same time. Once
spring came and the sun
started to melt the
snow, she began to take
off her coats one at a
time. That is why the
weather in spring is so
changeable in Romania.

Romanian Easter custom –
painting the eggs
Duration: 15:31
Level (listening
level required): B1
Summary: A group
of foreign students will
find out how Romanian
people prepare the most
popular orthodox dish
for Easter: painted
boiled eggs. The eggs
are dried and put in a
ceramic plate, after
they have been boiled,
and then they are
painted in different
colours. A Romanian
professor will help
students explaining them
how to paint boiled
eggs, including a few
cooking secrets in his
recipe.
Cultural notes:
Easter is the most
important event in the
Orthodox Christian
calendar, even bigger
than Christmas. The
hearts of Romanians are
full of hope and joy
looking forward to this.
Dressed in all their
finest clothes and
holding candles, people
gather round the
churches. At the Easter
Resurrection Mass (Slujba
de Inviere) just before
midnight, the priest
comes out to give a
blessing, distribute
holy bread and provide
the flame from which
everyone will light
their candles. Suddenly
the darkness is lit up
and thousands of candles
take to the streets.
Everyone tries to keep
the flame alive until
they arrive home. There,
around the table, the
family comes together
for a special Easter
meal. Roast lamb and
home-made cozonac
(sponge cake with nuts
and poppy seeds) are the
traditional dishes. One
of the most beautiful
Romanian Easter
traditions is painted
eggs. The shells of
hard-boiled eggs are
dyed in colourful
patterns, with a rich
red the prevailing
colour. They are often
decorated with folk
motifs. Designs are made
with an implement called
a condei or chisita - a
small cartridge filled
with paint with a sharp
point on the end. There
are a myriad of motifs
used on painted eggs.
The most popular ones
are the cross, the star,
the sun, the wave, the
zigzags, and stylised
flowers. Sometimes
motifs are applied using
natural leaves.
Traditionally, it's the
women who paint Easter
eggs, and they have to
do it on the Thursday
before Easter. Women are
not supposed to do any
work on the Friday.
Sunday Easter morning
the painted eggs are
tapped together with the
words "Hristos a Inviat
- Adevarat a Inviat" -
"Christ is Alive - He is
Alive indeed." This
beautiful ritual
proceeds the Easter
breakfast. For forty
days people, especially
in the countryside,
greet each other with
these words.
